Abstract

This paper analyzes the translation of dialect, more specifically of social and geographical dialect (Hatim & Mason, 2014), according to the approaches proposed by Marco (2002), in the French translation of “Diles que no me maten” by Juan Rulfo, (“Dis-leur de ne pas me tuer”, 2001, trans. Gabriel Iaculli). In order to do so, the social and geographical dialect markers are identified in the source text and the translation techniques used in the target text are analyzed. It was found that the dialect markers in the source text are translated without marks (Marco, 2002); in other words, they are translated using standard dialect. Lastly, alternative solutions are proposed for some dialect markers.
